VSCC Lakeland Trial - 2007

The Vintage Sports Car Club in Great Britain does exactly what its name says.  All eligible cars must have been manufactured before 1st January 1931.  The Lakeland Trial, as its name suggests, takes place in the English lake district, which is in the county of Cumbria in north western England.  The trial is comprised of about a dozen sections that are designed to test the skill of the driver and the capabilities of the car.  The most spectacular section is Drumhouse; a loose slate track that winds up the fellside to the top of a working slate quarry.  The following photographs show a few of the cars that attempted this ascent.

A picture of the hill taken from the quarry car park.  The start is just where the track kinks to the left. The summit is hidden in the cloud.

Early Bugatti after its return from a successful ascent.

Ford Model A special at the start.

One of the many Austin 7s.

I think this is a Singer special.

Tail end of another Austin 7.

Ford Model A with driver and three passengers for extra traction.

A GN being given a reversed tow.  The land Rover is attached by a sling and is controlling the descent due to doubtful braking ability of this car's anchors.

Austin 7...

...and two bends further up.

Note the sheer drop about 5 feet to the outside of the bend.

Not the place to make a mistake!

Vauxhall 30/98 an bouncing passengers.

The same car - onwards and upwards...

to a successful ascent.

Frazer Nash after shedding a drive chain just before the top.

For those 'not in the know', Frazer Nash used chain drive to the rear axle, did not use a differential and were extremely competitive in this type of event - usually.

MG M-type on its way to the top.

Morris Bullnose clawing its way up.

The inevitability of gradualness.

The Bullnose eventually made it.

Ford Model A romping up the hill.

Another batch of hopefuls waiting at the start.  Earlier competitors are descending to make enough room at the top.  The hill is so steep that passengers have to return on foot.  At least this minimised the potential number of casualties.

Note the rear two starters are deflating their tyres to gain better traction.

A lovely Lea Francis coupe.  This one was just spectating.
